A series of NASA images show the emergence and subsequent disappearance of a 'ghost island' spotted off the coast of Azerbaijan. Showcased on the space agency's website last week, the photos were taken by the Landsat 8 and 9 satellites as they passed over the Kumani Bank mud volcano in the Caspian Sea. In the first image, snapped in November of 2022, the area appears rather unremarkable. However, the subsequent image from early 2023 shows that the volcano had erupted and left behind a massive plume as well as a small island measuring approximately 1,300 feet across. A final look at the formation, captured on Christmas Day 2024, finds the tiny formation nearly washed away by the tides.
