Prince Harry has reportedly written to the British government requesting increased security for his family, following their recent move back to the UK from California. According to The Guardian, Harry expressed concerns over an Al-Qaeda threat made against his family in 2023, highlighting the need for elevated protection.
Currently, private security guards in the UK cannot be armed; only police officers are allowed to carry guns. The decision on who receives royal and VIP security is managed by an independent body, not the government. Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, and their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, have relocated to a non-royal residence outside London. Their children are already enrolled in British schools and are set to start in September.
Security arrangements have been a contentious issue for Harry, especially after he lost a legal battle last year over taxpayer-funded protection. The UK government maintains a rigorous and proportionate security system, but detailed information about these arrangements is not disclosed to protect their integrity.
The couple's return to the UK is said to be influenced by work opportunities and personal reasons, including Harry's desire to spend more time with his father, King Charles, who is battling cancer. The move also coincides with the upcoming Invictus Games in Birmingham and the 30th anniversary of Princess Diana's death, which will be marked by commemorations in the UK.
