The Supreme Court announced on Friday (December 5) that it will hear an expedited appeal regarding President Donald Trump's executive order aimed at ending birthright citizenship. This case, which could redefine who is considered an American, marks the second time Trump's order has come before the court. However, this time, the justices are expected to review it on the merits.
For over a century, the U.S. Constitution has been interpreted to grant citizenship to anyone born on American soil, regardless of their parents' legal status. Upon taking office for a second term, President Trump signed an executive order to change this practice, limiting citizenship to children born to legal permanent residents or citizens. Federal courts of appeals have blocked the order, deeming it unlawful at first glance.
The Supreme Court did not provide an explanation for its decision to hear the case. The oral arguments are expected to be scheduled for next spring, with a decision likely by the end of June.
