A law that just passed by Colorado lawmakers is already being opposed and sued by 5 Native Americans in Federal Court. The law makes it illegal to use any Native American name or mascot and can be punished with a $25,000 fine. The five Native American plaintiffs believe that this trend prevents schools from honoring tribes by representing their image and likeness for their name and mascots. They go on to argue that it does not allow their names and traditions to be honored respectfully if schools want to work with tribes directly. For more information on this story read here.
