Appeals Court Rules Trump Travel Ban Unconstitutional

A federal appeals court in Virginia ruled today that the latest version of President Donald Trump's travel ban was unconstitutional, saying it unlawfully discriminated against Muslims.

The 9-4 decision, was handed down by a majority of judges on the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. The court said they reached their decision after reading officials statements from Trump and other officials in the executive branch. They also referred to the proclamation itself, saying it was "unconstitutionally tainted with animus toward Islam."

This is the second federal appeals court to rule against Trump's travel ban.

The most recent version of the travel ban barred people from eight countries from traveling to the United States. Six of the nations cited in the ban are predominantly Muslim countries.

Late last year, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals also ruled against the travel ban, saying it violated federal law.

The Supreme Court is expected to hear arguments regarding Trump's travel ban in April. Trump has repeatedly pointed to the ban as a necessary safeguard for national security.
